I made the mistake of staying with Waihi Mike last night – at least being in Vegas the flatulence problem was partially disguised. Unfortunately I didn’t have any earplugs as his problem is also noise related.

We headed up to the village at 9:00. Mike made the first transport up just in time for the beginning of the Elite and Junior women training. The girls were struggling with the pond jump with no one attempting it – mind you a lot of the guys are struggling with this. The entry into it is quite difficult with riders having to make a solid turn into it, needing to maintain speed or else they’ll be taking a cold dip. It didn’t snow on the top of the course today like it did yesterday, but there was a solid frost. Generally the girls were loving the track. Although everyone was riding muds the track was giving good grip.
Kiwi Camp

Back at the Kiwi Tent I spoke to a few of the riders and some of the helpers. I managed to plaster all the NZ juniors with NZRide stickers – they are hot. Greg Leov – assistant manager was lurking, and loving the atmosphere. A few weeks ago he had is ear nearly completely ripped off whilst riding. Its sewn back on now and he still retains his Magnum P.I. looks. Heres what he gave up – Joels had surgery last night and is out. His replacement is Reuben Millar who comes into camp today. Under 19 Girl Represent, Holly Kernonhan-Smith had both arms bandaged up after doing ligaments. Apparently she hit up the boardwalk section pretty fast with a flat front tire, rolling the tire and herself. She’s angry, but she will only be out for 6 weeks is fully amped to get back on it. World Champ next year? Scolsy had a couple of stitches – although he wasn’t blaming this for his loss last night at putt-putt to Eddie Masters. Eddie is sporting the new bling gold NZRide stickers.

HOLLY KERNONHAN-SMITH

Cameron Cole was looking pretty relaxed at base camp. He rated his runs today as the most fun runs he has ever had. He is loving the mud. Cam had DH training with the big boys today, gaining a special exemption as he had 4x qualification at the same time as junior DH practice. I checked out his Turner 4x full sus bike. He has got the suspension so hard it almost feels like a rigid. But this is what you want, just enough suspension to take the edge off but not enough that he’ll lose power when he puts the hammer down.

NATHAN RANKIN

The 2 stage boys, Glen and Nathan were also lapping it up. Apparently Nathan had one of the runs of his life today. Fully believable too, when you saw how tapped out he was on track. Glennie is really turning a lot of heads, and has picked up some pace since Nationals. Kieran suffered some hand damage but nothing to keep him out.

TOM HOLLAND

If you’re interested in some stats on the NZ contingent, here they are:

75 Riders, 15 support staff, 2 DH mehanics, big tent, free water, toffee pops and a few other bits and pieces. DH mechanic, Declan Cox from Aro Valley, Wellington, has been wrenching on the DH bikes.

No mechanicals to date. So far they have just had to do a bit of cleaning and tuning.

Around the Pits

Superstars everywhere. Some of these riders are pretty solid boys. Rennie is a giant and wouldn’t look out of place in the Aussie forward pack – although more of a loose forward than a front rower. He looks like a runaway beer fridge when he is charging down the hill.

TRACY MOSELY

Tracy Mosely was looking relaxed and having fun on course. Her only difficulty on track was the Pond jump. Bryn Atkinson was again charging today and could be a podium wildcard if he holds it all together. Chickenman was looking the part in the Sram tent working onMick’s bike.

MATTI LEHIKOINEN

4x Qualification

Sad news from yesterdays practice was that young Australian rider Renee Junga  had an horrific crash and remains seriously injured in hospital. She came into the big jump straight a bit too fast and overjumped the second jump landing near the bottom and going over the bars after trying to get the nose down on the bike. She was stretchered off the track and taken to hospital.

[X] FOUR CROSS PICS COMING SOON...

In 4x qualifying each rider goes off by themselves racing against the clock for seeding positions. Michal Prokop the Czech was fastest qualifier in the mens, Brian Lopes second. US favourite Jill Kintner led the way in the womens. A lot of the riders were not liking the course. After the disaster of yesterday’s serious injury to Junga a few Aussies pulled out. Katrina Miller did not show for qualifying stating that the course was too dangerous. Mick Hannah pulled out as he was rating his chances on the DH (he told us he was “lovin’ it mate”) and wanted to focus on that, and unbeliveably powerful 4x superstar Wade Bootes crashed in 4x practice and ended in hospital which we suspect was concussion judging by the way that he landed on his head after a big summersault. You have to love jumping and speed or else the course is going to mess with your head. There were a lot of stopages due to riders going down. JK placed 14th, and seven other kiwis littered the remainer of the top 36. Given the snap out of the gate of the top few riders it would be a real surprise if a kiwi podiumed, but with four cross anything can happen. Maybe the kiwis should just concentrate on the first corner T-bone.

Tomorrow

Plenty of  action happening tomorrow. DH training in the morning with seeding happening between 2.00 and 5.00.

Weather for tomorrow – early morning frosts with slight cloud increasing towards the end of the day. With only minor showers for Friday and Saturday.

Keep it Real.
