[EDITORIAL NOTE:] I have a very small camera and feel quite inadequate next to all these pro photographers. And my lense is broken so these are quite likely pretty crap photos.

Woke at 7:00 to another frosty morning. We thought we would do the early morning ride mission, and headed out to the forest at 7:30. This was not a good idea unless you have got some warm kit and long hair to keep your ears warm. Chief reporter Mike Carden made the unfortunate mistake of riding with one nylon, work sock and one woollen one. The nylon one didn’t perform and Mike had to call it a day early – which made my decision to head back a bit easier suffering frozen hands.

First stop was the media centre to pick up the free food before heading up the mountain. We then headed for the pits to get some words from the riders. Its good to see the mountainbiking community starting to turn up to this amazing event. If you’re not here yet get on the way.

The riders were looking pretty relaxed before seeding runs. We talked to JK about the weather and strategies for seeding. His theory was to just pin it as its not mountain weather and could rain at any stage throughout the day. Also if you had a good seeding and then muzzard your race run you could still feel satisfied. Johnny did lay it down for seeding and was highest placed Kiwi coming in 9th, which was 4.90 seconds off Rennie who seeded fastest.

We spoke to Tracy Moseley who is looking a firm favourite for the women after seeding fastest, 3.29 seconds ahead of Sabrina Jonnier. Check out Mike’s interview with her. We also had a few quick words with her mechanic Paul – who had just received a text from Fabien who is definitely disappointed in missing the event. We also got the opportunity to talk with Nathan Rennie, who was looking forward to his seeding run – another interview for you to check out.

Fionn Griffiths was having a good time on track. She was telling us about her injuries – seven broken ankles (the same one), a broken back as well as a few other things. Long time circuit wrench Monkey was enjoying his time in NZ – apart from the cold. He’s been on the circuit now for 15 years and keeps getting drawn back into it. If you haven’t heard of him before – he is a bit of a legend and top dude and has seen the evolution of racing over his career. Monkey’s pick for the men’s title was Peat, Minnaar, and Hill, although he would love to see his G.T. rider Bryn Atkinson pull out an upset.

We spoke to all the Athertons, who are enjoying the track. They didn’t have a great time at seeding with Gee and Rachael seeding 10th and Dan having a mare 1:15.70 off the pace. We also spoke to 4x favourite Brian Lopes, Sabrina Jonnier, Viv and Mildie- interviews to come.

A bit of a surprise in the Junior Women qualifying was French rider Floriane Pugin seeding faster than Tracey Hannah although by less than a second. Their times would of just put them outside the top 10 in the Elite women.  The Junior Men results were fairly predictable with Sam Blekinsop first in a time good enough for 10th in Elite Men. Great Britain pinner Brendan Fairclough was second and Canadian rider Steve Smith in 3rd. Cameron Cole had crash at the bottom of the Larches tearing a ceat out of his shoe. He still managed 6th place and was only 11 seconds behind.

In the Women’s Elite, Moseley first, Jonnier second and perhaps a bit of a surprise was U.S. rider Melissa Buhl. Vanessa Quinn was fastest Kiwi in 6th with Jenna Makgill 9th and 14 seconds off Moseley’s time. Scarlett came in 12th.

The Men’s was Rennie in a time of 3:12.00, Peat second, and Minnaar 3rd. JK fastest NZ rider with Glen Haden and Justin Leov back in 13th and 14th respectively. A few riders were struggling with the pond jump with some of the slower men taking the nana route. No serious crashes for the day.

Weather for tomorrow – cloudy with rain with potential off sunshine and maybe the odd meteor shower. Will definitely be a frost in the morning.
